Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. In her early years she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to word associations. Ford began to become fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, and joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time however, Ford realised that this was not the best venue for her. Ford was then able to apply to be a student at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. One of her classmates was Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate began her TV debut in 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre has led to her joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up humor and humour, which she added to her repertoire in 1996, soon gained her admiration.
